Review: BETWEEN THE BLADE AND THE HEART by Amanda Hocking

Cover Between the Blade and the HeartBETWEEN THE BLADE AND THE HEART by Amanda Hocking / YA Fantasy / Released Jan 2, 2018 by St. Martin’s Press

When the fate of the world is at stake
Loyalties will be tested

Game of Thrones meets Blade Runner in this commanding new YA fantasy inspired by Norse Mythology from New York Times bestselling author Amanda Hocking.

As one of Odin’s Valkyries, Malin’s greatest responsibility is to slay immortals and return them to the underworld. But when she unearths a secret that could unravel the balance of all she knows, Malin along with her best friend and her ex-girlfriend must decide where their loyalties lie. And if helping the blue-eyed boy Asher enact his revenge is worth the risk—to the world and her heart.

Review:

This is the first Amanda Hocking book I have read and I must say that I am a FAN.  My taste in books include Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, Colleen Vanderlinden’s Home series and Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series so I am no stranger to the fantasy world.  Ms. Hocking beautifully builds a world that is both familiar and fascinating and fills it with richly developed characters.

Familiar are the challenges of a college-aged daughter’s relationship with her mother, juggling an ex-girlfriend and a new heart-throb and having a pet.  Fascinating is Malin’s role as a Valkyry, her questions about destiny and free-will and the fact her pet, Bowie, is a wolpertinger.

Seamlessly paced, BETWEEN THE BLADE AND THE HEART is a page-turner and I can’t wait for the second book in the series, FROM THE EARTH TO THE SHADOWS coming out in April 2018.

INTERVIEW:

Q: What or who was the inspiration behind Between the Blade and the Heart

A: I have already written several books inspired by Scandinavian folklore, and I was always fascinated by Valkyries. But because I had already done in Scandinavian fantasy, I wanted to come at this one from a different angle. I imagined the Valkyries helping to police a gritty, diverse, cyberpunk metropolis, in a world filled with not just Norse figures but from many mythologies.

Review: THE CURSE OF TENTH GRAVE by Darynda Jones

511btrrlgplTHE CURSE OF TENTH GRAVE A Charley Davidson Book #10 by Darynda Jones

Paranormal/Fantasy Released June 28, 2016 by St. Martin’s Press

As you may recall in book #9, learning her true name gave Charlie a healthy dose of amnesia and she took a little side trip to another life for a few months with her entourage in tow to keep an eye on her.

Now Charlie is back and she carries two things: the knowledge that the love of her life is one of three brothers sent to earth to kill her daughter and secondly, the god glass pendant to trap them.

As if that isn’t enough to keep her busy she also has a runaway girl fearing for her life and the task of clearing an innocent man accused of killing his girlfriend. And who on earth is Garrett following?

Things are escalating in the series, powers building, sides are being chosen and then there’s the proverbial line in the sand. But even when it appears that Charlie and Reyes are going in different directions their love is always unwavering.

Ms. Jones delivers another tongue-in-cheek, edge-of-seat adventure flawlessly. I love this series.

51lco4tdzil-_sx326_bo1204203200_Book #11 Eleventh Grave in Moonlight comes out January 24, 2017. While I’m not thrilled with the jump in price ($12.99 as opposed to $7.99 for book #10) I am sure I will eventually add that to my collection.

Review: KARMA by Nadine Nightingale

Karma_w10669_750Amanda Bishop was about to start a new life as a NYU student when her past forced her into another direction – at gunpoint.

Alex Remington is a hunter and Amanda’s former lover until he found out she was a witch. He didn’t take the news well, but when his brother disappeared it was Amanda he turned to for help.

KARMA is a perfectly paced paranormal mystery. Written in first person, we follow Amanda as she and Alex follow leads, pedophiles, and the occasional dead body to find Alex’s brother.

Nightingale seasons this complex plot with masterfully written flashbacks that bring just the right amount of information to the reader. This is no small feat. There is real skill in knowing just how much info to deliver this way without hijacking the plot and sending the reader off into the wilderness.

The story ends with a touch of foreboding, leaving us a hint of what may come in the next installment in this must read series.

This is a debut novel for Ms. Nightingale who professes to a serious Marvel superhero addition and considers the world her home. Nadine Nightingale is definitely an author to follow.

Fan girl review of Mercy Thompson series

By Laurel Newberry

patricia briggs credit Mike BriggsPatricia Briggs is right at the top of my list of favorite authors. She is a brilliant storyteller who weaves vivid three-dimensional characters through a tapestry of regional history and believable fantasy. These characters will stay with you long after the cover is closed and keep you checking back to see if there is a release date for the next installment.

Fire TouchedMarch will see the release of Briggs’s ninth Mercy Thompson book, “Fire Touched”, which shares a timeline with her Alpha and Omega series. This makes it the fifteenth in what the author calls the “Mercy-verse”.

Urban Fantasy at its finest, this series invites the reader to explore an entire community of creatures that range from werewolves and fae (like you see on Grimm), to witches and vampires, all living in community with the unsuspecting human population. Based on locations you can actually visit, Briggs creates the supernatural so well we are left to wonder if she knows something we do not.
